Elche, is located 13km from Santa Pola and 23 from Alicante. Once we are in the city we should visit the Basilica of Santa Maria, a 17C structure built in the Baroque style, which is the stage for the presentation of the famous Misteri d'Elx (Mystery of Elche) every august. Nearby is La Calahorra, which is the only remnant of the walled-in area which protected the city before its expansion. Also in the vicinity is the municipal park including the old Muslim Selds which were enclosed by tall palm trees. The park is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and well cared-for in the entire country. Somewhat removed from the centre of town, but on a very well-marked road is the Huerto del Cura (Priest's Orchard) which in addition to having a botanical marvel, a palm tree with seven trunks, is a magnificent garden of cacti and refreshing walks.
In Elche we can witness two very old and unique spectacles: one of them is the gathering of the dates in winter which is not only difficult but also dangerous. The other is the auto sacramental (mystery play) which is put on in mid August in the Basilica in order to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin. The traveller will be given more information on this magnificent play a little later.
