History of Sandanski

The town of Sandanski is named after Yane Sandanski, born in the village of Vlahi, approximately 20 km away from the town  - a notable figure of the National Macedonian Community in the revolutionary district of Seres. One of his first deeds was the capture of the American missionary Elena Stone for which he was paid a big ransom, used for the supply of guns. He was killed in 1914 in the region of Papaz chair (Popovi livadi)..

In 1913 Second Bulgarian Army  liberated Saint Vrach from the Turkish yoke. After the wars 1912-1913 and 1915-1918 here a lot of Bulgarian refugees from Aegean and Vardar's  Macedonia have settled. The village has become the centre of the district.

Location
Situated in south eastern Europe, Bulgaria occupies the north eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the North, via the Danube River, it borders on Romania, to the West - on Serbia and Montenegro and on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. To the South its neighbours are Greece and Turkey. To the East Bulgaria touches the Black Sea, which links it also to Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia. The Black Sea borderline is 378 km (240 miles) long.  The country's total territory is 111 000 sq. km (43 000 sq. miles).

Health services in Sandanski municipality are structured as it follows:

1. Pre-hospital medical service represented by 31 GPs. 16  of them have registered their own company and 15 are cooperated in "Avitsena" LTD
2. Pre-hospital medical service, represented by the municipal Diagnostic Consultative Centre with 15 professionals in the different spheres of medicine - tel. 22128.
3. Medical centre "St.Kozma and Damyan", with 10 professionals in the different spheres - tel. 29277.
4. Municipal hospital "Saint Vrach" - the town of Sandanski. It includes all of the main wards, 186 beds и 200 persons staff - tel. 22531 and 22532.
5. Sanatorium and recreation complex - the town of Sandanski - tel. 23231.

Transport Systems

1. Railway Transport
Railway station, the town of Sandanski is 4,5 km from the centre of the town. There is a loading platform, as well as a crane for loading and unloading.

2. Road transport
1,6 km far from the centre of Sandanski passes a main road Е 79.

There is  a transport between towns and villages, connecting the railway with the sanatorium and the residential areas near by the town. The bus transport provides a link of the town of Sandanski with the town of Blagoevvgrad and the capital Sofia, as well as with  the town of Kyustendil, the town of Samokov, the town of Petrich and others. Almost during the whole day (10 hours) a two-way bus trip from Sandanski to Blagoevgrad and Sofia is provided.
