The reddish Sierra de Callosa surrounds this large town which is located in the farming area around the Segura River. In the days of Abderrahman III, the inhabitants of Qualyusa gained a reputation as they refused to pay taxes to the crown. Much later, during the Hundred Years War, it was renowned as the home of the famous warrior Bertrand du Guesclin. The town gained its independence from Orihuela in 1579. Callosa del Segurahas conserved its medieval Islamic structure and has preserved such architectural jewels as the Iglesia Arciprestal de San Martín, which was declared to be a National Monument in 1980 and is one of the most notable examples of Gothic art in the province. An interesting walk can be made through the old town centre from the Iglesia de San Martín to the San Roque hermitage, which provides wonderful views over the Vega Baja of the Segura River. |
