When the War of Spanish Succession between the Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs divided Spain the Cardinal of Cartagena-Murcia, Luis Antonio de Belluga y Moncada, sided with the Bourbons. After their victory Felipe V granted the cardinal the title of 'Field Marshall' of Valencia. The Cardinal had a grand project to drain the marshy land of the Vega Baja and use it for farming - the rent obtained from this land would then be donated to charitable works.
