Its mild climate and fertile land (with fluvial deposits) ensured its agricultural prosperity, though its real wealth began when Cardinal Belluga drained the marshes at the beginning of the 18th century and the village obtained its independence from Orihuela - 1741. The town's district borders on the Hondo Reservoir, which can be hiked to via the numerous rural trails throughout the area.
Direct motorway access means that Catral lies just 30 minutes from Alicante or Murcia airports, with the beautiful beaches of Guardamar and Torrevieja just 15 minutes away. The nearest railway station is only 3 km .
The boundary of Catral joins Embalse de El Hondo a protected national park where you can enjoy rambling and cycling in an area of extensive wildlife
